2015 Nissan GT-R is More User-Friendly, Gets Subtle Styling Upgrades

Besides the new GT-R Nismo, Nissan will also unveil the updated 2014 GT-R (2015MY GT-R in the U.S.) at the Tokyo Motor Show. The refreshed model brings a series of upgrades that give it a more comfortable ride, more refinement and a more upscale interior.

The GT-R’s suspension has been fine-tuned to reduce load fluctuation between the four wheels, providing better stability and more consistent grip. Nissan has also optimized the electronic control of the shock-absorber valves and modified the front stabilizer spring rates and bush link, giving the car an enhanced road-holding capability.

Other updates include the reduction of minute vibrations and road noise, the addition of new Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT 600 DSST CTT standard tires.

The brakes have also been retuned for a more firm and linear response at everyday speeds, making smooth braking more intuitive. Moreover, steering is now easier to use during in-town maneuvers.

In terms of styling, the updated Nissan GT-R features new LED headlights with AFS (Adaptive Front lighting System) and a distinctive "lightning" motif, while the four-ring taillights now form coherent circles of illumination.

The GT-R also gains a new body color called Gold Flake Red Pearl, featuring microscopic gold-tinted glass flakes infused into the red paint. Nissan also offers an optional carbon rear wing, which is attached to a carbon trunk lid that weighs half than the standard trunk lid.

On the inside, the new model year car comes with a choice of three color schemes including a new pale ivory trim option. The steering wheel gets a leather wrap, while the part-aniline leather seats are feature stitched accents. Less noise enters the cabin even at high speeds thanks to optimized insulation and acoustic tuning.

Sales of the 2014 Nissan GT-R begin in Japan on December 2, with other markets worldwide to get the car next year.

Raw Footage: Enjoy New Nissan GT-R NISMO's Nürburgring 7:08 Lap from In-Car Camera

Some people appreciate hearing commentary over Nürburgring videos like the one we posted earlier today about the new 2015 Nissan GT-R Nismo Edition, while others, myself included, prefer to hear the engine sounds and nothing else, leaving the rest to their eyes.

If you belong to the second group, we have you covered with this new clip shot from inside the car of Nissan racing pilot and test-driver, Michael Krumm, as he lapped the infamous Nordschleife in just 7 minutes and 8.679 seconds, smashing the previous GT-R record (7:24.22) by over 15 seconds. An impressive feat indeed.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said that, "With this lap time, we can authoritatively say that the 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO holds the volume production car lap record at the Nordschleife, which is the gold standard of high performance achievement."

The reason why he used the word "volume" is because the much more expensive and far more limited production Porsche 918 Spyder turned the 'Ring in 6:57.

Nissan pointed out that the record-running GT-R Nismo was equipped with track options, which including aerodynamics tuning, weight reduction, and suspension tuning tweaks.

New 592HP Nissan GT-R Nismo is the Fastest One Ever, Watch it Lap 'Ring in 7:08 [50 Pics & Videos]

Following yesterday's first leaked photos and information, Nissan has officially revealed the GT-R Nismo Edition ahead of its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show. Nismo’s third product after the 370Z and the Juke, the GT-R Nismo is the fastest production GT-R ever, according to Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, turning the Nürburgring in an amazing time of 7:08.679.

A factory tuned supercar, the GT-R Nismo has been developed with input from racing. Featuring a modified bodykit for improved aerodynamics and upgraded suspension and powertrain, the GT-R Nismo is said to feel equally at home on the track and on the street.

Just like the standard GT-R, the Nismo is powered by the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 VR38DETT engine, but with race-inspired modifications that lift power to 592hp (600PS) and 652 Nm (481 lb-ft) of torque. These upgrades include new high-flow, large diameter turbochargers from GT3 racing that improve the engine's breathing, as well as optimized individual ignition timing control for each cylinder and upgraded fuel pump that improve combustion. No performance specs have been disclosed yet.

The GT-R Nismo has a suspension setup inspired by that of the Nismo racing GT-R, with Nissan saying it combines agility, road-holding and handling without compromising refinement. The springs and custom-developed Bilstein DampTronic dampers in the front and rear suspension are specially tuned to maximize grip and progressive handling response at the limit. The suspension has three modes: Comfort, Normal and R – the latter recommended for the racetrack. The car also features a 17.3 mm (0.68in) hollow rear anti-roll bar and rides on exclusive Nismo tires developed by Dunlop.

Design-wise, the GT-R Nismo features new front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and a massive rear spoiler that contribute to increase downforce by more than 100kg (220 lbs) at 300 km/h (186 mph) compared to the freshly updated 2014 GT-R model. The black 6-spoke wheels are inspired by Nissan's legendary GT500 race car, with the carmaker also offering an exclusive color for the bodywork called Dark Matte Grey.

On the inside, the carbon-fiber-backed reclining Recaro seats dominate the cabin, with other noticeable upgrades being the Alcantara-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel with red center mark and red stitching, the combi meter with a carbon-like finish and the red tachometer.

The Nissan GT-R Nismo will be available in Japan in late February 2014, with U.S. and Europe deliveries to follow later in 2014.

As mentioned, Nissan has confirmed a 7:08.679 lap time at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, which makes the new GT-R Nismo (in a configuration with track options that will be available to order by customers) holder of the volume production car lap record at the German track. Scroll down to see the lap and find out more about the development of Nismo’s flagship model in the videos.
