BMW Art Car Legacy Dies with Jeff Koons

I have resisted the temptation to post the Jeff Koons BWM art car for a very long enough, but today I brake my silence. This BMW art car is everywhere, with gushy articles galore about how "great this" how "great that", yada yada yada. On and on it goes with article after article singing the praises of Jeff Koons. Dude!!!! BMW has produced some truly amazing art cars created by artist such as Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol. All these guys actually painted their cars, unlike Koons who barely scratched the back of the BMW with a sharpie to sign his name. The art on the BMW is a CAD generated art work that was printed on vinyl and applied to the bodywork and various spare parts. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against vinyl but at what point did Koons get on his CAD program and crank out this art work? BMW used Koons star power to promote their latest creation which is fine me, but in my opinion he can't hold a candle to the great artists who came before him. Unless BMW rethinks their choice of artist to represent their cars in the future, there will be a lot more candle vigils taking place.

Tesla Motors finally got in the art car game by commissioning their very own Tesla Roadster art car created by digital media pioneer Laurence Gartel, whose commercial work includes glossy magazine advertisements for Absolut vodka.

The car is for sale for only $109,000, but because it features a vinyl car wrap, the buyer will have to pony up a few more bucks for the art work which by the way has a shelf life of about 5 years. via cnet.

The Telstar of Whangamata Sticker Art Car Highly Contagious

This Sticker Art car was sent in by Murray McKenzie from Whangamata, a beach town in New Zealand. The art car is a 1995 Ford Telstar hatchback covered in free stickers from a local surf shop that took about 6 months to complete. I think this sticker art car might be contagious by the looks of the developing sticker rash on car parked next to it.
I believe now might the time to put Whangamata under quarantine until this thing sticker infection passes.

19 Donk Cars Covered in Candy Paint

Some time ago I posted a video about a cars covered in Cheetos and Doritos vinyl graphics, and the other day I found the ultimate Facebook car called a "Donk". I got some grief over it because one of my art car friends did not think it was considered an "art car". For me its a unique form of expression that deserves some face time here on Art Car Central. They also look like a lot of fun to drive around in so I managed to find 19 top corporate brand covered cars with famous cereal, snack and drink names. These "hi-riser" or "sky-scrapers" cars have gigantic rims ranging from 22" to 30"and extremely high ground clearance that resemble urban 4x4's,  are called "Donks". The term "Donk" came from the impala symbol on any Chevy impala from the year 1971 to 1976, because the symbol looked like a "donkey". It became popular in the south to cover these cars with name brands using vinyl car wrap technology. The most popular type of car used are Chevrolet models, namely the Impala, Caprice, Monte Carlo, and Chevelle. Other models that are frequently made into hi-risers include the G-body Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass, El Camino, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Pontiac Bonneville. Burberry Gets a Black Eye by Chavs in the UK.

Some time ago I posted my first Burberry Art Car, but last night I discovered that this was just the tip of the British iceberg. In the UK Chavs is a phenomenon, youths of ill-repute, often football hooligans, who dress in designer brands, and Burberry being the particular brand of choice. According to a BBC article, the Burberry brand became a victim of its own success when Chavs co-opted the brand and now is associated with people who do bad stuff and many even think that Burberry is be worn by the person who mugged them. Fortunately sales of Burberry outside the UK did very well in spite of the "Chav" stigma.
