BMWs Run Deep in this Family of Fives

The E28 BMW 5-Series is a very restrained product of the sex-obsessed 80s. Its sober lines and monolithic appearance still make it an imposing machine today, although it’s much more than its look that have made this family get one for each member.

Barn Find 1992 BMW 525i E34 with Just 14,708 Miles

Built from 1988 through 1996, the E34 is a car that changed many perceptions about BMW's 5-Series in the executive sedan category with a more modern approach in styling as well as mechanical and technological solutions than the shark-faced E28. It's not easy to get a low-mileage sample these days, but it's not impossible either, as this eBay find proves.

Spied: 2017 BMW 5-Series Prototypes in Both Sedan and Touring Bodies

If BMW keeps its usual seven- to eight-year long product cycle, then the prototypes of the next, seventh generation 5-Series Sedan and Touring (estate) seen in these spy pictures will mature into production models sometime from late 2016 to early 2017, given that the current F10 was revealed in November 2009 and released in May the following year.

There are very few confirmed details about the new 5-Series, but we can expect some significant weight savings, possibly up to 100kg (220 pounds) on average over the current car through the use of more aluminum and other light materials on both the chassis and body panels, as well a wave of improved turbocharged gasoline and diesel, units.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants that will benefit from the cooperation between the BMW Group and Toyota, together, of course, with a range topping M5 version, will complete the range.

As for the styling, BMW is likely to follow an evolutionary approach, with these early (and heavily camouflaged) examples featuring a lower front end, and in the case of the sedan, a sleeker roofline ending as well.

New BMW ActiveHybrid 5 Priced from $61,845, Nearly $10k more than the 535i [130 Photos]

If you want a little more power (but slightly worse performance) and a little better fuel economy and don't mind paying US$9,345 over the price of a regular 535i, then you may want to take a look at BMW's new ActiveHybrid 5 sedan.
If you live in Europe or in any other region where BMW offers diesel variants of the 5-Series, then you're probably better off with one of those models – we'll explain why later on.
BMW today announced that the ActiveHybrid 5 will go on sale in the States in March with a base MSRP of $61,845 (€47,800), which includes an $895 destination and handling fee.

BMW Driver Too Fast for his Own Good…

It seems that the BMW 5-Series [E39] sedan owner seen in this surveillance footage using what looks like an Opel Vectra as a launching ramp either failed to recall or was never told about the merits of defensive driving.
Guess he just had to learn his lesson the hard way… Fortunately, from what we can tell from the video that follows below, no one seems to have been seriously hurt.

New Alpina B5 Bi-Turbo Based on 2011 5-Series Coming to Goodwood

Independent BMW customizer Alpina has published the first official sketch of its upcoming B5 Bi-Turbo ahead of the sports saloon world premiere at next month's 'Goodwood Festival of Speed' event in the UK.

As the car's name suggests, the B5 Bi-Turbo is based on the new 2011 BMW 5-Series sedan. So far, Alpina is keeping a tight lid on details about the car, but if the company's previous and current models are anything to go by, then the B5 Bi-Turbo could be all the M5 you'll ever want.

2011 BMW 5-Series M Sport Package Catalogue Leaked

A gallery of scanned photos from a leaked brochure gives us our first glimpse of the M Sport Package for the 2011 BMW 5-Series, which is expected to be available for order this fall. Even though the pictures show an M Sports-dressed Touring model [F11], understandably, the same parts will be offered on the sedan version [F10] of the new 5-Series.

The color-coded aero kit includes a newly designed, chunkier front bumper with larger air ducts, side skirts and a revamped rear bumper with an integrated diffuser finished in a dark shade and chrome tail pipes.

BMW Says New 5-Series Sold Out in All Markets, Three to Four Months Wait

Only a month after it first went on sale in Europe and a week in the U.S., BMW's brand-new 5-Series sedan, codenamed F10, is sold out in all-markets with customers having to wait up three to four months for deliveries, according to company officials.

"The 5-Series is at the core of the BMW brand and we knew it was going to be a very strong vehicle for us," said Ian Robertson, BMW's sales boss, today in an interview at an industry conference in Bilbao, Spain. "In the U.S., where it's doing very well, it could come to between 15 percent and 17 percent of our business as we ramp up," Robertson added.

SCOOP: BMW Attempts to Spiff up 5-Series GT with M Sport Package

What do you do to improve the image of a vehicle that looks like the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo? Well, the painful answer to that question would be to head back to the drawing board. However, given that this is not an option for a model launched less than two years ago, BMW thought of spicing it up with the always welcome M Sports package.
Spied here in Germany, the prototype model of the 5-Series GT with the M Sports treatment gains new, lower front and rear bumpers, deeper side skirts and larger alloy wheels in a different design.
As is the case with all M Sports Packages, we can expect minor tweaks in the interior with a three-spoke steering wheel, sports seats, aluminum pedals and door sills, plus bespoke upholstery and headlining.

BMW 5-Series Sedan

Unless you are able drive into to an enclosed garage nearby, there’s not really much you can do to protect your car -or anything else in danger for that matter- if you are caught out in a severe hail storm. However, this doesn’t mean that some people won’t try to prevent the inevitable like this owner of a previous generation BMW 5-Series sedan.
Said to be a Croatian tourist on a visit to Slovenia, the owner of the Bimmer attempted to save the body of his beloved car by covering it up with whatever he could find. In this case, the only available items were some clothes he had in a plastic bag. Somehow, it doesn't seem like such a great idea... Watch the clip right after the break.

BMW Showcases Fleet of Emergency Vehicles at RETTmobil 2011

Following in the footsteps of Mercedes that dressed up the SLS AMG as an emergency medical vehicle, BMW unveiled its very own proposals at the RETTmobil, the leading European trade for emergency services and mobility, held in Fulda, Germany (May 11-13).
BMW has a more down-to-earth approach to the show as its emergency models are based on mainstream vehicles that are more suitable for this line of work than the fast, but unpractical, SLS AMG. We're talking about the BMW 3-Series/5-Series Touring models and the X3/X6 SUVs, although the latter is not new, having premiered at the same show in 2008.

The hype surrounding the upcoming M5 continues with a new video released by BMW showing the Bavarian firm’s high-performance sedan being tested at the company's Miramas proving grounds in the south of France. Given that the M5 is scheduled to be unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September, these are probably the final rounds of testing before production begins.
