VW Cross Coupe GTE Concept Hints at New Mid-Size Crossover for U.S.

VW is previewing its plans for the North American market with a new mid-size crossover concept named Cross Coupe GTE at the Detroit Motor Show.
It’s the third crossover concept from VW in two years after the seven-seater CrossBlue from the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, and the very similar CrossBlue Coupe from the 2014 Shanghai Auto Show.

In the German carmaker's own words, the study "shows the future design language for Volkswagen's North American SUVs". VW said that at the end of 2016, it will produce a seven-seater mid-size SUV at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, adding that the new concept serves as a preview to this vehicle.

If you're confused, you're not alone, as the 7-seater model should be closer to the 2013 CrossBlue concept, while the Cross Coupe GTE looks like a refined version of the 2014 CrossBlue Coupe for a BMW X6-style mid-size crossover from VW.

Like the other two studies, the concept car presented in Detroit is based on VW's MQB architecture and it measures 190.8 inches (4,846mm) long, 79.9 inches (2,029mm) wide and 68.3 inches (1,735mm) tall.

It can seat up to five passengers and features a hybrid powertrain that combines a 3.6-liter VR6 gasoline engine delivering 276hp and 258 pound-feet of torque with two electric motors producing 54hp and 162 lb-ft (front) and 114hp and 199 lb- ft (rear). The electric motors are powered by a compact lithium-ion battery housed in the center tunnel, which is rated at 14.1 kWh.

The total system output adds up to 355hp and 280 lb-ft, pushing the Cross Coupe GTE onto a top speed of 130 mph (209km/h) and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96km/h) in 6.0 seconds. The driver can select an E-Mode in which the 114-hp rear electric motor drives the vehicle shutting down the VR6 engine for up to 20 miles (32 kilometers).

All-New 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe to be Revealed at Detroit Auto Show

With the ATS already poking a dent in the compact luxury segment against German and Japanese rivals like the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4 and Lexus IS, Cadillac is ready to move on to the next phase with the reveal of a coupe model.

According to an Edmunds report citing insiders, the new ATS Coupe will make its world premiere at the upcoming 2014 Detroit Motor Show in mid-January before it goes on sale first in the U.S. next summer and then in the rest of the world.

Spy pictures of the car reveal a more streamlined and conventional look for the ATS Coupe compared to the slightly larger CTS Coupe, which we're still not sure if it will be replaced.

The two door model is expected to feature a similar engine lineup to the sedan with a choice of a standard 202hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, or the optional 272hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and 321hp 3.6-liter V6 units. A top "V" high-performance model will come at a larger stage with more than 400-horses to challenge the BMW M4.

2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Makes Debut at (a Not So) Private Event

Photos from a reportedly private unveiling of the brand new 2015 Hyundai Genesis that took place in Korea today and during which, evidently, cell phone cameras were allowed, have popped up on the web, affording us several new views of the sedan from different angles, including, of the interior.

According to Hyundai, the new Genesis mid-size luxury sedan adopts the brand's more expressive and "emotional" Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language which it says, is defined by the following core elements:

"Simple and harmonious design with refined fluidic design elements, modern Hyundai look with a singular hexagonal grille, easy-to-understand and pleasant design and rich visuotactile color, material and finishing of the car."

Marketing talk aside, what we see with our own two eyes from the pictures is a sharper looking design all around with Hyundai trying to give (force?) the Genesis a more individual and less generic character than the first generation sedan.

There's less of that going on inside, but overall, the dashboard does look richer and more premium than that of the current model, at least in this specification. Two details we don't really care about are the Japanese family car-style buttons on the driver's side and the analogue clock on the center stack.

Official information on the 2015MY Genesis' hardware remains limited, with Hyundai having stated that the car will come with "improved suspension and application of various advanced technologies" to offer "top-class driving and ride and handling performances", and that for the first time, an electronically controlled all-wheel drive system that splits torque between the front and rear axles depending on road and driving conditions, will be available on certain engines.

What we do expect is for Hyundai to offer the new Genesis with a familiar set of V6 and V8 units, possibly with its new 10-speed automatic transmission (if not at launch, later on).

We hear that the 2015MY Genesis will break cover in the United States at the Detroit Motor Show next January, with sales to begin during the first half of 2014.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan Exposed Without Any Camouflage

If you were unhappy with the low- quality leaked brochure shots of the all-new 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan, maybe we can help, as our spies pulled off a photo shoot of a naked example of the luxury German model while it was being filmed in the USA.

The new C-Class, seen here wearing the optional AMG Styling package (again, not to be confused with the upcoming AMG 63 performance version), looks sleeker and more contemporary than the current model, blending the design DNA of the bigger (and more serious) S-Class and the smaller (and frumpier) CLA saloons in an intermediate (size) package.

Mercedes has already divulged details and provided official photos of the interior, which raises the bar in terms of styling, and according to the company, quality as well. It also adds new or upgraded features ranging from the optional head-up display projecting info on speed limits, navigation and messages from DISTRONIC PLUS as a virtual image, to a fingertip controlled touch pad within the lower center console for the standard 7.0-inch or optional 8.4-inch color monitor placed on top of the center stack.

One of the highlights of the next C-Class is the weight reduction, with Benz stating that the new aluminum hybrid body along with other measures has shaved around 100 kilograms (221 lbs) over its predecessor.

Want more? There's also a new four-link front and five-link rear suspension with aluminum components, an optional Airmatic air suspension, which is a C-Class first, with the car gaining all of the available passive and active safety technology introduced on the S-Class and E-Class.

Mercedes has been fairly quiet about the C-Class engine lineup, but aside from a rumored hybrid version(s), expect a familiar range of force-fed 4-cylinder and V6 gasoline and diesel units.

Unless the Germans are plotting a surprise reveal in LA, we should get our first live look at the next C-Class at the 2014 Detroit International Auto Show in January.
