Chevrolet Aveo New Face in China

Shanghai GM, one of General Motors’ Chinese joint ventures, has previewed the refreshed Aveo family ahead of its sales debut in June. Confirming the spy photos we presented last month, both the hatchback and the sedan get a new face inspired by the 2016 Cruze that ditches the motorcycle-style headlights of the current model for more conventional units.

GM Recalls 2.42 Million Vehicles in Four Separate Actions

General Motors today announced that it is recalling about 2.42 million vehicles in four separate U.S. recalls. The first and most significant recall involves 1,339,355 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia full-size crossovers from the 2009-2014 model years and Saturn Outlooks from 2009-2010.

New Corvette C7 Variant, Updated Cruze and New Small Chevrolet Car to Debut in New York

We just received word that General Motors plans to host three world premieres at the forthcoming New York Auto Show on April 16, including a brand new variant of the Corvette C7 (not shown in these photos), "an important new addition" to the brand's small vehicle lineup and an updated/refreshed (these were the precise words used) version of the Cruze.

GM Avoided Ignition Switch Redesign to Save About $1 Per Car

Some disturbing information has surfaced during the U.S. congressional hearings related to the ignition switch defect that has caused at least 13 deaths. According to an internal GM document provided to investigators, General Motors decided in 2005 not to replace the faulty ignition switch on new cars because it would have added less than a dollar to the cost of each vehicle.

Study Shows Nissan Leaf Drivers Cover Less Electric Miles Than Chevy Volt Owners

The Nissan Leaf is an all-electric car that in the US, offers a claimed 76 miles or 121 km of autonomy, whereas the range-extender Chevrolet Volt promises only 38 miles or 61 km before the petrol engine kicks in to recharge the batteries.

However, while looking at those figures alone would have you thinking that it would be the owners of the purely electric model covering most no-emissions miles, a recent study suggests the exact opposite.

The EV Project Vehicle Summary Report, issued by the US Department of Energy (DoE), collected data between the months of April and June this year and compiled them for some surprising results.

It revealed that in spite of having more battery on board to take them further, Nissan Leaf drivers actually covered fewer miles than Volt owners. They back this up with more numbers: 629 miles per month for the former, and 759 for the latter.

A number of factors could be affecting these readings, though, so they’re not necessarily accurate without question, yet they do offer an interesting suggestion that Bob Lutz may have actually had a point about the Chevy using the gasoline engine only when needed; if owners operate it properly (i.e. keep the battery charged at all times via socket and plug) the 1.4-liter petrol engine is rarely used.

In fact, it was found that the 759 aforementioned miles of range actually constituted around 75 percent of the total number of miles driven (1,012 of them on average, to be precise).

GM President Reuss Really Into Doing a High-Performance Chevy Sonic

The president of GM’s North American affairs, Mark Reuss, was recently quoted by Automotive News as saying he would very much like to see a high-performance variant of the Chevrolet Sonic make it into production.

His exact words, from the sidelines of the LA auto show last week were: "Yeah, I'd love to do that... We've got the ride-and-handling vehicle dynamics for it."

This new hot model would sit above the current warm RS variant, the one that has a 1.4-liter 138 hp engine under the hood as well as styling and suspension tweaks. That power figure would have to be brought up closer to 200 hp, if this new model stands any chance of matching the Ford Fiesta ST, or the smaller and lighter 160 hp Fiat 500 Turbo/Abarth.

The sound of all this is quite promising, and we’re all for putting more power in a front-wheel drive eco-box and seeing what happens. We will follow this up once new information becomes available.

Chevrolet Kicks Off Sales of Corvette Stingray Convertible with Premiere Edition

To mark the U.S. sales debut of the 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible, Chevrolet has launched a limited series called Premiere Edition. Production will be limited to 550 units, all in an identical configuration: top-of-the-line 3LT models with Lime Rock Green exterior paint and Brownstone suede interior.

The Convertible Premiere Edition also features suede-wrapped interior trim, carbon fiber accents, variable tuned performance exhaust system, Z51 Performance Package and Magnetic Selective Ride Control.

Other standard features are the wheels with “Stingray”-logo center caps, “Stingray”-logo interior sill plates and a five-piece set of Corvette-branded luggage from Thule – all from the Corvette Accessories catalog.

Each of the 550 units will have a unique VIN (vehicle identification number) sequence and unique dash plaques to mark their limited-run status.

The 2014 Corvette Stingray Premiere Edition Convertible will cost $77,450 (€57,142), including destination and delivery fees. Deliveries begin in early 2014.

If that’s too expensive, Chevrolet has also released a list of nine other Corvette gifts for the holiday season, starting from a $12 Corvette Stingray Rollerball Pen and ending with a $5,000 Corvette Heritage Neon Sign.

Other suggested gifts are a Monopoly Empire Game ($20) featuring a 2014 Corvette Stingray game piece to travel around the board, a 1:18 2014 Corvette Stingray ($38.50), a book about the seventh-generation Corvette ($40), Fisher Price Power Wheels Corvette ($275), a Corvette watch ($775) and Corvette Stingray Luggage ($910).
